CTotW: Peep War Stories, Jamie Lee

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

In a return to peeps, we have the edible strategy game, Peep War. For a long time, we’ve used different candies to represent monsters in our D&D game. Whoever kills the monster gets the candy. Right now they are reserved for mooks1 that Goddessdaughter kills. She’s only five so we’ve been adding rules here and there as she learns to read numbers and do math. It’s all a part of our secret conspiracy to get her to learn with chocolate and games.

Speaking of games, and narrative (we never talk about that here), Six to Start, the same people responsible for Perplex City, have started a new ARG which also “tells stories in a way that they never could be told before.” The first story, The 21 Steps, is told with Google Maps. The second starts today.

Oh, and via Fleshbot, there’s this SFW article, detailing Jamie Lee Curtis topless. On the cover of AARP. Now I feel old. And yeah, she still looks good (even if she was always too skinny for us).

Also, check out this beautiful tattoo done by Anna Banana at Evolved upon the body of the wife.

1Joe stole this term from the generic bad guys in the game Feng Shui, and thought it was the normal meaning. Now it is in our group.

CTotW: Holy Flaming Peeps, Bat(man?)

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Mostly just linkifying today.

First, everyone say “awwww” at our first blurb. It’s kind of nice to see “Cult of the Turtle” so close to “Play This Thing“. I’m just glad she saw the post — I have to wonder, what the protocol for that is. Should I have sent her a link in the first place or not? I’m not going to send Ubisoft a link when I finish my critique of Assassin’s Creed, after all.

Next, Joel Spolsky predicts the next big flamewar. It’s basically the classic argument between the correct and the pragmatic, or to put it another way: those who are right in theory vs those who are right in practice. It details the current debate on how IE 8 should handle pages which say they conform to the strict standard. The spec says that if they say they do, and they don’t you shouldn’t try to fix it. The problem is that they might have conformed to the standard the way it was understood last year (or in 1995), but which is no longer right. Pages that are bug-compatible with IE 6, or (shudder) Netscape 4.71. The problem becomes that when you do the thing that’s right in theory, stuff breaks. Joel points out that Microsoft tried this with MS Vista. And we all know that’s going well for them.

Not that it greatly matters, as we’ll be using Firefox 3. Except at work. Crap.

On another note: I really miss Dr. Fun this time of the year.

And since nothing we do is complete without sex, we offer Susie Bright’s commentary on the classic 70’s porno “Bat Pussy“.

CTotW: Mighty Jill Off

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

This week’s Cool Thing is the game Mighty Jill Off by Anne “Dessgeega” Anthropy. It’s made in Game Maker, a freeware application for, well, making games. It is also BDSM-themed, which is how it caught our attention here at Cult of the Turtle.

Indie games are the rage this year, especially after the Independent Games Festival a few weeks ago, and while this game wasn’t one of them, it still shows the kind of thing that can come out of the indie games movement. The game was released on February 29th, and as we’re sure was intended by the author, the main mechanic in the game is jump–, err leaping.

The mechanic itself is interesting: the left and right arrow keys to move horizontally, and the ‘Z’ key to jump. Instead of the traditional “press jump to double-jump” that is common in platformers like this, instead the second ‘Z’ press cancels your jump. Tapping the ‘Z’ button after that allows you to float, as Jill is “flapping her rubber cape.”
