Carbs Fail
Noticed this Fail today in my browser:

The image in Firefox. Note the ad in the upper left.

The image in IE, now you can read the title, and see the fail.
The problem, of course, is that the css for that flash animation (which will not go away in firefox) is supposed to be in the bottom right gutter, but is fubarred in firefox. I’d never have noticed the ad if it wasn’t in the wrong place. And totally wrong for the article, of course.
And it might be interesting to read the article, which is about how carbohydrates kill off the neurons which regulate our feeling of fullness.

So, do carbs serve any useful purpose? Is it like fats that in small quantities are needed for absorbing certain vitamins and are vital for brain development in young children? Or is like processed sugar, that is good only as faking the signal to our brains that the fruit is ripe enough to eat?
I meant to respond to this sooner (sorry, I wasn’t in a place I could respond when I saw it the first time).
I don’t think carbs or proteins are inherently bad. The one place I see most dietary instruction agreeing is that we need to eat more complex foods — by which they mean less processed. So, what’s killing us isn’t sugar, but sugary treats (which usually have high fructose corn syrup). It’s not that sugar is bad — we still think oranges are pretty okay, for instance.
Our bodies have to work harder for those calories, which burns more, and keeps our systems healthier. So, as I’ve told SexyWife many times, it’s about better ingredients. (Which is why the wheat cookies/crackers that are advertised are probably not that great — who knows what they’ve done to the wheat. Whole grain bread — bread with actual grains in it, is better for you, frex).
Just my thought about it, obviously I’m not doctor or nutritionist. Anecdotally, when SexyWife and I went on South Beach, we changed a lot of the base ingredients we used — to ones which are largely more expensive, of course — and we had never felt better, and a lot of the diabetes symptoms went away (like the lo-blood-sugar lightheadedness).
Anyway, that’s my take on that.
